Shiki Taira is a Nihon-ga artist. She takes up a theme based on various Japanese traditional culture. Her skillful composition based on traditional techniques and color gained high reputation. She integrates bright color and contemporary designed Kimono for Bijin-ga, lively and funny character into phantoms.

She says “ I enjoy deforming the distinctive features of a person’s skeleton
when I paint that person and bring out unlimited images come to my mind while I paint phantoms. We have an idea the gods dwell in various creatures and nature traditionally in Japan. Phantom is a part of these ideas and painted and printed in subject of Ukiyo-e in Edo-period by Hokusai Katsushika and others.

One-eyed-phantoms she paints are lovable and do not harm people. They are one of the indispensable characters for her work.

She was introduced in a group exhibition “Bijinga & Mythology” at Building Bridges Art Exchange Gallery in Santa Monica in 2016 first time in the U.S. Her works were raved at L.A. Art Show in 2017 and 2018. She has been very active having solo exhibitions and numerous group shows through out Japan since 2014. She is one of the top young traditional Nihon-ga artists.
